Voisey’s Bay Nickel Mine

Voisey’s Bay Nickel Mine, located in northern Labrador, is an open pit nickel mining operation offering a fly-in/fly-out work arrangement. Discovered in 1993, this site has become one of the most substantial mineral findings in Canada for decades. Initially, surface mining operations commenced in 2005 to exploit its rich nickel vein. The mine, currently owned by Vale Canada Limited, has expanded beyond nickel to produce copper and cobalt since its inception.

A significant expansion project transitioned the mine from open-pit to underground operations, marked by the first rock blast for an underground mine portal in October 2018. Despite a temporary suspension due to market conditions in 2017, this project resumed with the intention of extending the mine’s operational life until 2034.

The expansion, estimated at £1.4 billion ($1.7 billion), is set to increase the mine’s output significantly, offering up to 45,000 tonnes of nickel, 20,000 tonnes of copper, and 2,600 tonnes of cobalt annually.
