Suncor Firebag
Find diverse roles in oil sands extraction, operations, and maintenance at a key SAGD project in Alberta.

Using steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) to extract bitumen from oil sands.
The Firebag facility, situated approximately 120 kilometers northeast of Fort McMurray, is Suncor's largest in situ oil sands operation. Utilizing Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) technology, Firebag produces up to 215,000 barrels of bitumen per day from about 600 wells. In the first half of 2024, Firebag achieved back-to-back record production quarters, delivering 229,000 barrels per day in the first quarter and surpassing that with 234,000 barrels per day in the second quarter. These milestones underscore the facility's focus on continuous improvement and operational excellence. Additionally, Firebag contributes to Alberta's electricity grid by delivering 325 megawatts of low-cost, lower greenhouse gas intensity power through its cogeneration units.
