The North Warning System (NWS) is a network of long- and short-range radar stations that spans across Canada’s Arctic and northern regions, designed to monitor and detect potential aerospace threats approaching North American airspace. Operated through a partnership between the Canadian Armed Forces and the United States, the NWS plays a vital role in continental defense under NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command). The system includes dozens of unmanned radar sites and regional support facilities across Nunavut, Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Labrador. Operations and maintenance have been supported by contractors such as Nasittuq Corporation, which provides essential services including radar maintenance, logistics, transportation, fuel delivery, and remote monitoring. The North Warning System is a cornerstone of Canada’s Arctic sovereignty and aerospace defense strategy, offering long-term employment and technical roles in some of the most remote and challenging environments in the country.
