Responsibilities

The Utility Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating heavy equipment to support roads and grounds maintenance and special projects.

  • Operate rock trucks, excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, and other assigned equipment safely and efficiently
  • Follow all legislative, company, and safety policies related to equipment operation and maintenance
  • Maintain cleanliness, security, and conduct regular inspections of equipment
  • Communicate equipment issues or maintenance needs proactively
  • Collaborate with team members and perform laborer duties as required
  • Participate actively in safety initiatives such as JHAs, FLRAs, and safety meetings
  • Seek continuous improvement opportunities in equipment operation
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors and management

Requirements

Applicants must meet safety, licensing, and physical requirements to operate heavy equipment in this demanding environment.

  • 2-5 years heavy equipment operating experience
  • Valid Class 1 or 3 Driver's License
  • Clean 5-year Personal & Commercial Driver Abstract obtained within 30 days of start
  • Common Safety Orientation (CSO) certificate
  • WHMIS 2015 certification
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs or more
  • Safety conscious attitude
  • Willingness to work in fluctuating climates and near water
  • Ability to pass Drug & Alcohol and Fit for Duty tests
  • Clean shaven for testing and ongoing
  • Fluent English in reading, writing, and speaking
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada
  • Assets: Finishing experience, TDG certification, Ground Disturbance certification, OSSA Confined Space Entry and Monitor certification, First Aid certification, H2S Alive certification

The Horizon Oil Sands Project, located approximately 70 kilometers north of Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada, is a significant oil sands mining and upgrading operation owned and operated by Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL). The project encompasses surface mining of bitumen, extraction, and on-site upgrading to produce high-quality synthetic crude oil (SCO). Since its inception, Horizon has undergone several expansions to enhance production capacity and operational efficiency. As of 2024, the mine produces approximately 250,000 barrels per day of SCO, with plans to increase capacity by an additional 195,000 barrels per day.
