Responsibilities

The operator will be responsible for safely operating and maintaining various types of heavy equipment at Fort Hills.

  • Operate excavators, dozers, graders, water trucks, loaders, snow plows
  • Conduct pre-op checks and log entries
  • Ensure equipment cleanliness and safety readiness
  • Report required repairs to maintenance
  • Participate in safety meetings and assessments
  • Perform laborer tasks when required
  • Maintain positive working relationships
  • Grease and inspect equipment as needed

Requirements

Applicants must be experienced equipment operators with strong safety credentials and physical readiness.

  • 2-5 years heavy equipment experience with GPS systems
  • Valid Class 5 license (Class 1 or 3 preferred)
  • Ability to lift/pull 50 lbs and work in all weather
  • Must be able to work day/night shift rotation
  • CSO, WHMIS 2015, TDG, OSSA Confined Space, Ground Disturbance, First Aid, H2S Alive
  • Pass drug/alcohol and fit-for-duty test
  • Fluent in English (spoken, written, read)

Fort Hills Oil Sands Project

The Fort Hills Oil Sands Project is a major open-pit mining operation located in the Athabasca region of northern Alberta, approximately 90 km north of Fort McMurray. Operated by Suncor Energy—which holds the majority ownership—the site began production in 2018 and is one of Canada's most modern and efficient oil sands operations. With a production capacity of 194,000 barrels of bitumen per day, Fort Hills utilizes paraffinic froth treatment technology to produce a partially de-asphalted product with lower greenhouse gas emissions. This advanced method allows Suncor to deliver market-ready oil without the need for on-site upgrading, reducing environmental impact and improving efficiency.
