Ekati Diamond Mine
The Ekati Diamond Mine, located 300 kilometers northeast of Yellowknife in Canada's Northwest Territories, is the countrys first surface and underground diamond mining operation, producing over 100 million carats of diamonds since it began in 1998. Initially operated by BHP Billiton, the mine was acquired by Dominion Diamond Corporation in 2013 and later sold to Arctic Canadian Diamond Company in 2021 following Dominions financial challenges. In July 2023, Burgundy Diamond Mines, an Australian-based company, purchased full ownership, marking its entry into Canadas diamond mining sector. Current operations include the Sable open pit and the Misery underground mine, with ongoing exploration promising extended mine life. Ekati remains a key contributor to the global diamond supply and supports the local economy with a commitment to sustainability and community engagement.
