Barrick Gold Corporation is seeking an Underground Heavy-Duty Mechanic Apprentice to join its Hemlo Operations at the Williams Mine near Marathon, Ontario. This residential position operates on a 7 days on, 7 days off rotation, requiring candidates to live within commuting distance, with a local travel allowance provided. The apprentice will support the underground mobile maintenance team by assisting with equipment servicing, repairs, and preventative maintenance. Guided by journeyperson mechanics and leadership, the role emphasizes safety, learning, and hands-on experience with mobile mining equipment such as scoop trams, drills, and haul trucks. The apprentice supports maintenance operations and develops technical skills under supervision. Responsibilities include:
- Assist in preventative maintenance and repairs on underground equipment.
- Support diagnostics and repair work with mechanics.
- Identify and gather required parts and tools for tasks.
- Complete inspection checklists, work orders, and logs.
- Learn CMMS systems like SAP to track maintenance activities.
- Follow instructions from supervisors and journeypersons.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area through housekeeping.
- Participate in safety meetings and training activities.
- Engage in continuous learning and development opportunities.
- Perform other maintenance support duties as required.
Requirements
Candidates must meet the following qualifications to be eligible:
- Enrollment in or recent graduation from a Heavy Duty Technician apprenticeship/pre-apprenticeship program.
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
- Underground Common Core certification is an asset.
- Basic mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical system knowledge.
- Strong commitment to safety and learning.
- Physically fit to work underground, lift up to 50 lbs, and perform demanding tasks.
- Able to wear PPE and follow site safety protocols.
- Effective communication and ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Positive attitude with strong teamwork and a desire for a career in mining maintenance.
