Kearl Oil Sands Project

The Kearl Oil Sands Project, located approximately 70 kilometers north of Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada, is a significant undertaking in the Athabasca Oil Sands region. Jointly owned by Imperial Oil (71%) and ExxonMobil Canada (29%), the project is a beacon of technological innovation aimed at enhancing environmental performance while reducing costs. Kearl is notable for its high-quality oil sands deposits and utilizes Paraffinic Froth Treatment technology. This method, along with the integration of energy-saving cogeneration, allows Kearl to produce blended bitumen with life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions comparable to many other crude oils refined in the United States. Since its initial development phase began in April 2013, followed by an expansion in mid-2015, Kearl has reached a production capacity of 220,000 barrels per day. The project has an estimated 4.6 billion barrels of recoverable bitumen resource, projected to meet North America’s energy needs for the next 40 year
