SunHills Mining

SunHills Mining is a wholly-owned subsidiary of TransAlta Corporation, responsible for operating the Highvale Mine in Alberta, Canada's largest surface-strip coal mine covering over 12,600 hectares. The Highvale Mine supplied low-sulphur coal to TransAlta's Sundance and Keephills coal-fired power plants. In December 2021, the Highvale Mine ceased operations as part of TransAlta's transition away from coal-fired electricity generation. Following the mine's closure, TransAlta proposed the SunHills Solar Project, a 108 MWac solar facility located on the reclaimed Highvale Mine site, expected to generate approximately 202 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually.
