Nemaska Lithium

Nemaska Lithium is a Canadian company specializing in the production of high-purity lithium hydroxide, a key material used in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Headquartered in Bécancour, Quebec, the company operates the Whabouchi Mine in the Eeyou Istchee James Bay Territory and is constructing a large-scale conversion facility in Bécancour. The company’s vertically integrated model—from spodumene extraction at Whabouchi to refining at its Bécancour plant—positions it as a key player in North America’s battery supply chain. The Bécancour facility, powered by hydroelectricity, is the first of its kind in Canada and will produce lithium hydroxide using environmentally responsible processes. Nemaska Lithium is jointly owned by Investissement Québec and Livent Corporation, combining strong public sector support with global lithium expertise. The project is expected to generate hundreds of full-time jobs in areas such as mining operations, chemical processing, instrumentation, electrical work, logistics, and administration—making Nemaska Lithium a major source of skilled employment in Quebec’s growing clean energy economy.
