Ekati Diamond Mine
Located northeast of Yellowknife in the remote wilderness of the Northwest Territories, the Ekati Diamond Mine has a distinguished reputation for producing premium gem-quality diamonds. It holds the distinction of being Canada's first underground and surface diamond mining operation. Recently acquired by Burgundy Diamond Mines, an Australian-based company, for $150 million US, the Ekati Diamond Mine is entering a new era of growth and development.
Operating on a fly-in, fly-out basis due to its challenging location, Ekati Diamond Mine offers a unique work experience. Employees typically commute to the mine site by aircraft for their work rotations, as there is no road access to the region.
Working conditions at Ekati can be demanding, particularly due to the region's extreme weather. Winters are long and frigid, with temperatures plummeting below freezing, while summers are short but can still be quite cold at times.
