Major oil sands mining and upgrading facility producing synthetic crude oil.

The Syncrude Mildred Lake facility, located approximately 40 kilometers north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, is a cornerstone of Canada's oil sands industry. Established in 1978, it was one of the first large-scale surface mining and bitumen extraction operations in the region. The facility includes an open-pit mine and an upgrader that processes bitumen into synthetic crude oil. As of September 2024, the Mildred Lake upgrader has a design capacity of 350,000 barrels per day. Syncrude is a joint venture with the following ownership structure: Suncor Energy: 58.74%, Imperial Oil: 25.0%, , Sinopec: 9.03%, and CNOOC: 7.23%.
