In-situ oil sands project in Alberta, utilizing SAGD for bitumen extraction.

The Surmont Oil Sands Project, situated in the Athabasca region of northeastern Alberta, approximately 35 miles south of Fort McMurray, is an in situ operation employing SAGD technology. Initially a joint venture between ConocoPhillips and TotalEnergies, the project underwent a significant change in ownership. In October 2023, ConocoPhillips completed the acquisition of TotalEnergies' 50% stake, thereby gaining full ownership of the Surmont project. The project has a design capacity of 136,000 bpd, with ongoing efforts to optimize production and operational efficiency.
