Processing bitumen into synthetic crude oil near Fort Saskatchewan.

The Scotford Upgrader, located near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, is a key component of Shell Canada's integrated hydrocarbon processing complex. This facility processes bitumen extracted from oil sands into synthetic crude oil, which is then refined into various petroleum products. The upgrader employs hydrogen addition technology, enhancing the hydrogen-to-carbon ratio of bitumen to produce lighter, more valuable crude oil. In 2015, Shell launched the Quest Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project at Scotford, designed to capture and store over one million tonnes of CO? annually, demonstrating a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Scotford Upgrader plays a vital role in Canada's energy infrastructure, contributing to the production of cleaner fuels and supporting the country's energy needs.
