Lloydminster Upgrader processes heavy crude into synthetic oil and fuels.

The Lloydminster Upgrader, located in Lloydminster, Alberta, is a significant facility that processes heavy crude oil into synthetic crude oil and other products. Commissioned in 1992, it was originally a joint venture between Husky Energy and the Government of Saskatchewan. In January 2021, Cenovus Energy completed its acquisition of Husky Energy, becoming the sole owner of the upgrader. In March 2024, Cenovus announced plans to utilize the Lloydminster Upgrader to process oil sands crude from its Foster Creek and Christina Lake operations, aiming to extract more value from the facility. The upgrader continues to play a vital role in the region's energy infrastructure, contributing to the local economy and employment.
