Work on reclamation and support crews at one of BC’s most important mine closures.

The Equity Silver Mine is a historic silver, gold, and copper mining operation located about 35 kilometers southeast of Houston, British Columbia. Once one of Canada’s largest silver-producing mines, Equity Silver operated from 1980 until its closure in 1994. The site included both open-pit and underground mining operations and contributed significantly to the regional economy during its years of activity. Today, the Equity Silver Mine is owned by Newmont Corporation, a global leader in gold mining, which acquired the property through its 2019 purchase of Goldcorp. Although commercial mining activities have ended, the site remains active in terms of environmental monitoring and reclamation. It features a fully flooded tailings impoundment designed to control acid rock drainage and other legacy environmental concerns. The Equity Silver Mine is widely regarded as a case study in mine closure planning and long-term site management in British Columbia’s mining sector. Its history, ownership, and ongoing environmental responsibilities continue to make it a point of reference in the industry.
