Oil sands in-situ project focused on bitumen extraction through thermal recovery.

Imperial Oil's Cold Lake operations in east-central Alberta are among the world's largest in situ oil sands projects, producing approximately 190,000 barrels of bitumen per day using Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS) and Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) technologies. In 2024, the facility achieved first oil from the Grand Rapids project, deploying a new recovery method that reduces emissions intensity by up to 40%. Imperial is also advancing a carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiative at Cold Lake, aiming to sequester CO? emissions and align with its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. These innovations ensure Cold Lake remains a leader in both energy production and environmental stewardship.
