Cenovus Sunrise
Join one of Alberta's most advanced oil sands projects, focusing on sustainability, innovative extraction technologies, and safe operations.

Utilizing steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) technology for bitumen extraction.
The Sunrise oil sands project, also operated by Cenovus Energy, is situated in northern Alberta, approximately 60 kilometers northeast of Fort McMurray. Similar to Christina Lake, Sunrise employs SAGD technology for bitumen extraction. In 2022, Cenovus acquired the remaining 50% interest in Sunrise from BP, becoming the sole owner and operator of the project. This acquisition has enabled Cenovus to implement its advanced operating techniques, aiming to increase production and reduce operating costs. As of 2024, Sunrise has a production capacity of approximately 60,000 barrels per day, with ongoing development programs to further enhance output.
