Worksite/Project
Stobie Mine
The Stobie Mine in Sudbury, Ontario, is undergoing a major transformation as Vale revives the historic site for new open-pit mining operations. Originally opened in 1890, Stobie was one of the oldest and most productive nickel and copper mines in the Sudbury Basin until its closure in 2017 due to operational restructuring. In 2024, Vale announced plans to restart the Stobie site as an open-pit mine, signaling a new era for the property and creating renewed interest across Sudbury’s mining workforce. The revitalized Stobie Mine project is expected to generate significant employment in the region, with roles in drilling, blasting, heavy equipment operation, engineering, environmental monitoring, safety, and site maintenance. Construction and site preparation work has already begun, and full-scale open-pit mining is anticipated to ramp up through this year. Located within Sudbury city limits, the project benefits from existing infrastructure, proximity to Vale’s processing facilities, and access to an experienced local workforce.
