Worksite/Project
Cenovus Foster Creek
Foster Creek is one of Cenovus Energy’s most advanced in-situ oil sands operations, located in northeastern Alberta near the Alberta–Saskatchewan border. As one of Canada’s first commercial steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) projects, it plays a key role in the country’s bitumen production strategy. The site uses horizontal well pairs and continuous steam injection to extract bitumen from deep underground reservoirs in the McMurray Formation. Foster Creek includes multiple phases of central processing facilities, water treatment systems, and cogeneration units that enhance energy efficiency and reduce emissions. Cenovus continues to invest in performance improvements and environmental upgrades across the operation. With a long reserve life and integrated infrastructure, Foster Creek remains a cornerstone of Canadian in-situ oil sands development and a major contributor to Alberta’s resource economy.
