Waasigan Transmission Line Project

The Waasigan Transmission Line Project is a major infrastructure initiative led by Hydro One in partnership with nine First Nations communities to strengthen the electricity supply in Northwestern Ontario. This project will add 350 megawatts of clean energy to the region, more than double the power required for the city of Thunder Bay. The transmission line will extend from the Lakehead Transformer Station in Shuniah to the Mackenzie Transformer Station in Atikokan, with a further extension to the Dryden Transformer Station in Dryden. Construction is planned in two phases: the first phase, from Shuniah to Atikokan, is expected to be operational by the end of 2025, while the second phase, from Atikokan to Dryden, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.
