Resume Formatting

Resume Fonts

You must pay great attention to your resume fonts. Think of your resume as a marketing tool which you trying to promote yourself to secure a job. Your resume font should look great and professional just like the suit you would wear to a job interview. Do not use any cursive or logo fonts. All throughout my career, I have seen many resumes with font like Comic Sans. Absolutely make sure not to use fonts like these.

In professional world, serif font family widely used. Fonts like Times New Roman, Bell MT, Bodoni MT, Bookman Old Style, Cambria, Goudy Old Style, Calibri, Garamond, and Georgia belongs to this family. So feel free to use any of them to your liking.

If you’d like more options, explore san-serif fonts like Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, Trebuchet MS,Century Gothic, Gill Sans MT, Lucida Sans, and Tahoma.

Resume Font Size

When writing a resume, it is common to use a font size between 10-12. You can always tweak the font size if you trying to fit your resume to one page. But make sure not to make it too small or too large. Also pay attention to the specific font you are using since all fonts are not the same size.

Resume Margins

It is ideal to keep 1/2 to 1 inch margin on all sides of the resume paper. Most of us still use printed resumes. Proper margins help to print the resume without any copping occurring. Employers do not bother to edit your resume in printing process. So you must set proper margins on your resume to avoid printing errors.

Resume Spacing

Most of the resumes are single spaced. And a blank space can be used between the sections of the resume.

Resume Paper

If you printing out your resume, use a high quality off white paper. It will make your resume look professional than the ones printed on regular white paper. Click here to check out some great resume papers for low price.

Resume Sections

Your resume must be broken down in to sections. All the sections of a resume must be well defined and organized. Nobody wants to read a sloppy resume. Below we will discuss what information goes in what section.

Resume Header

Header is the most important section of a resume. It contains your personal information such as your full name, mailing address, phone number, and email address. Pay extra attention to this section since this is how interested employers will contact you. You do not want to list a wrong address or a phone number and miss out any potential employment opportunities.

Objective

In this section, you will let the employer know what job you applying for and quick recap of your prior experience and qualification. Make the objective section brief and informative. Ideally, couple of sentences will be enough for this section.

Education

Write down all the education you had starting from your high school. You may also write down all the certificates and courses you have completed in related to job you are applying for

Experience

In this section you will list all the prior employment with details. Write down the employer name and address along with the positions you held. Furthermore, write down all the duties and responsibilities you held for each job. You must also write down the dates you were employed with each employer.

Skills & Abilities

This section is for your skills and abilities. Write down all the computer, technical, and language skills you have. In a nutshell, this section is to let the employer know you are not just a robot. Let the employer know that you have many other skills or abilities in related to the job you applying for.

References

At last you will write down few reliable references related to your field. Make sure to write down correct contact methods for each reference as well and your relationship. This section is an optional section. But listing few references could show the employer that you are confident in yourself and your prior work experiences.
